Buy Abstract Painting: What Does a High-Quality Original Cost?
Teilen
If you're considering buying an original painting for the first time, one question inevitably arises: What is a fair price? And what distinguishes a €200 work from a €2,000 piece? This article gives you an honest answer – transparent, well-founded, and straight from my studio.
Important note: All prices mentioned here refer exclusively to my own works. They serve as a guide for my portfolio and do not represent a general market analysis for contemporary art as a whole.
What Determines the Price of an Original Painting?
Behind every hand-painted original lies a complex calculation that goes far beyond the pure material cost:
- Size and complexity: Larger canvases require not only more paint, but a significantly higher level of compositional precision.
- Premium materials: The use of highly pigmented professional acrylic paints and specialty mediums such as real 24 karat gold leaf significantly increases material costs.
- Time investment: A multi-layered work with complex textures can require 20 to 40 hours of studio work.
- Packaging and logistics: Original art is shipped in custom-made wooden crates – ensuring your work arrives in perfect condition.
My Price Guide: Full Transparency for Collectors
I believe in clear, honest pricing with no hidden fees. Here is my current orientation by format:
- Small formats (e.g. 30x30 cm): from €230 – The ideal entry point for new collectors.
- Medium formats (e.g. 60x60 cm / 80x80 cm): from €470 to €630 – A strong statement for living rooms or office spaces.
- Large format (e.g. 100x100 cm): from €1,110 – Room-defining works with maximum presence.
- Signature Works (from 120x100 cm): from €1,490 – My most elaborate pieces with the highest material investment, often including 24K gold leaf.
Note: Works from my Archive Selection are occasionally available at a 20% discount – these are the last available originals from earlier series.
Print vs. Original: Why the Investment Is Worth It
A high-quality art print is decorative – but an original painting is an experience. The price difference is justified by:
- One-of-a-kind status: An original exists exactly once in the world. It cannot be reproduced.
- Texture and materiality: The physical surface – palette knife marks, brushstrokes, and real gold leaf applications – cannot be printed.
- Light dynamics: Especially in works with gold leaf, the painting changes with the angle of light. The original is alive.
- Value retention: While prints are mass-produced, original paintings by established artists retain their intrinsic and material value.
Checklist: What to Look for When Buying Art Online
To invest in art with confidence, check the following points before purchasing:
- Certificate of authenticity: Is a signed document included confirming the title, year, and materials used (e.g. 24K gold leaf vs. imitation gold)?
- Shipping method: Is the work shipped in a sturdy wooden crate or just cardboard?
- Right of return: Do you have a 14-day right of withdrawal to view the work in your own space?
- Material transparency: Are the materials used (e.g. Horus gold leaf) clearly stated?
FAQ: Common Questions About Buying Original Art
From what price is a painting considered "high quality"?
-
Quality starts with the choice of materials. A serious original on professional canvas realistically starts at around €200 for small formats. Precious metals like real gold leaf and custom framing naturally raise this base price.
Is buying original art a good investment?
-
Art should primarily be purchased because it moves you emotionally. Value appreciation is possible with recognized contemporary art and is a welcome side effect – but should never be the sole reason to buy.
How safe is the shipping?
-
Every work I ship is fully insured. The custom-made wooden crate protects the painting from mechanical impact during transport.
What is the difference between an original painting and an art print?
-
An original painting is a unique, hand-painted work – it exists exactly once. An art print is a mechanical reproduction that can be made in unlimited quantities. Original paintings have texture, materiality, and a physical presence that no print can replicate.
How do I recognize a trustworthy seller when buying art online?
-
Look for: transparent material disclosure, a certificate of authenticity, clear pricing, professional packaging, and a clear return policy. Reputable artists show their creative process and answer questions openly.
