Between Worlds

Between Worlds brings together very different works – some calm and atmospheric, others dense and richly textured, others playful and colorful. In the studio

When I paint, everything else disappears. No sense of time, no thoughts about what still needs to be done – just the color in front of me and the next moment. I hear the brush on the canvas, sometimes feel the paint directly under my fingers – to sink even deeper into the creative process. I don't plan ahead. I simply begin and at some point, right in the middle of it, I know a painting is finished. I just feel it.

When words weren't enough anymore, I started to paint.

There was a time when my own ambition overwhelmed me, until eventually nothing worked anymore. What came after wasn't easy, but it was the most honest reckoning with myself I've ever had. Painting became my language, where words no longer were enough.

That was hard at first. I wanted to know where a painting was going before I'd made the first stroke. Today, it's the exact opposite that I love most about painting – not knowing what comes next.

Maybe that's exactly why art moves us – not because it explains something to us, but because we recognize ourselves in it.
