Building an art collection means choosing deliberately, thinking curatorially, and filling spaces with works that move you and endure. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced collector, building a collection follows the same core principles: quality, uniqueness, and emotional resonance.
Why an Art Collection Is More Than Decoration
A collection is a curatorial statement. It shows personality, an eye for style, and the ability to recognise quality. Every work you choose says something about you – and together they tell a story.
Abstract originals are particularly well-suited for an art collection: their open visual language allows for interpretation, they fit nearly any interior style, and they take on new meaning with every viewer.
Step 1 – Define Your Focus and Theme
A strong collection has a common thread. This can be a colour palette, a technique, a format, or an emotional theme. Three proven approaches:
Colour focus – all works share a dominant colour palette, such as blue and gold, earth tones, or black and gold. Creates visual coherence in the space. Technique focus – gold leaf, texture paste, multi-layered acrylic as a connecting element. Emotional focus – works that express a particular feeling: calm, energy, melancholy, joy.

Step 2 – Quality Criteria When Buying Art
These quality markers matter for a collection:
Certificate of authenticity with artist's signature and studio seal – documents originality and provenance. Material quality – high-quality pigments, acrylic paints, gold leaf on professional gallery canvas. Gallery-ready craftsmanship – cleanly stretched, ready to hang immediately. A truly unique, one-of-a-kind work worldwide – no reproductions, no prints. Direct purchase from the artist – no gallery markup, documented provenance.
Step 3 – Formats and Spatial Planning
A collection comes alive through how it's staged in a space.
Statement piece – a large-format work from 100×80 cm as the anchor of the collection, around which all other works relate. Picture wall – several smaller formats (40×40 to 80×80 cm) as a curated group, connected through colour, technique, or theme. Spatial sequence – works along a circulation axis (hallway, living room, bedroom) create an aesthetic narrative throughout the entire home.
Step 4 – Care and Documentation
A collection needs care and documentation: avoid direct sunlight and high humidity, keep certificates of authenticity and proof of purchase in a safe place, check insurance coverage for your works – especially large-format originals – and clean regularly with a dry, soft cloth rather than solvents.

My original works start at €340 for framed small formats and range up to €2,900 for large-format one-of-a-kind works with 24-karat gold leaf. How many works do I need for a collection?
A collection begins with the second work – as soon as two works relate to one another, a curatorial statement emerges. There is no minimum number.
Should I collect thematically or stylistically?
Both work. What matters is that the works enter into dialogue with one another – through colour, technique, format, or emotional expression. I'm happy to advise you on putting a collection together.
How do I properly care for my works?
Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity. Don't hang above radiators. Store certificates of authenticity separately.
Can I return the work?
Yes – you have a 14-day right of return. Return shipping costs are borne by the buyer.
How long does delivery take?
Within Germany and the EU approximately 5–7 business days, worldwide approximately 10–14 business days – insured and free of charge in a custom-built wooden crate.
Do the copyrights remain with the artist?
Yes – purchasing the work gives you ownership of the original. Copyright and all reproduction and exploitation rights remain exclusively with Sabine Runge.
